Down Syndrome Limerick is a local charity that supports children and adults with Down Syndrome.  Based in Castletroy, it is managed by our
members on a voluntary basis.

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal condition.  Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes – 46 in total.  People with Down Syndrome have 47 – one extra chromosome! People with Down Syndrome are all different, but in general the extra chromosome can make it harder to walk and talk and so our members greatly benefit from additional support that we provide like speech and language therapy and occupational therapy.

We run an adult education programme. Last year we commenced a new module called Work Skills on this programme. The module teaches adults with Down syndrome the skills required for the world of work which increases their opportunities for employment. This is the first time this course has been available in the Mid West region and the money raised from the Three Counties in 2021 has enabled us to fund this course.

We have opened up a satellite centre in West Limerick which makes services more accessible to our members living in that area. Again the Three Counties Cycle helped us to achieve

We also arrange lots of fun events like dance, zumba, youth club, music therapy and drama. ~~These activities have all continued to run online since March 2020. Throughout Covid the demand for our services has increased and we have been delighted to offer our therapies and activities online during the lockdown periods.

Down Syndrome Limerick also provides school supports for children and their teachers and SNAs. We also regularly run workshops, seminars and training courses so that children can be fully supported at school and at home.

Throughout Covid the demand for our services has increased and we have been delighted to offer our therapies and activities online during the lockdown periods.

At Down Syndrome Limerick we rely on generosity of individuals and businesses to fundraise for us.  This helps to keep our services running but
also allows us to continue to increase our offering to our members. Your contribution will help us to keep our services going and to give our members every opportunity to achieve their full potential.
